Japanese domestic production only provides for 40 percent of Japan's food needs. In the wake of the Great Northeast Earthquake and Tsunami, Japan is even more dependent on outside sources of food and agricultural products. The Japanese food market is highly dependent on imported food to meet the needs of its consumers.
