Document 1: Excerpt from The Code of Hammurabi Hammurabi (1811-1750 BCE) was the sixth king of Babylonia. The Code of Hammurabi. written in 1754 BCE, is one of the oldest known examples of a written code of law. Comprised of 282 laws, the Code is carved onto stone and clay tablets and arranged into orderly groups. Society in ancient Babylon was divided between free and enslaved classes, and the laws treated people according to their social status. The six laws covered in this excerpt detail a man's punishment for hitting a pregnant woman.

209: If a man strike a free-born woman so that she lose her unborn child, he shall pay ten

shekels for her loss.

210: If the woman die, his daughter shall be put to death.

211: If a woman of the free class lose her child by a blow, he shall pay five shekels in

money.

212: If this woman die, he shall pay half a mina.

213: If he strike the maid-servant of a man, and she lose her child, he shall pay two

shekels in money.

214: If this maid-servant die, he shall pay one-third of a mina
