According to Reverend Perkins, Narcissa Whitman and her husband were not suited to mission work in Oregon Country. In a letter to Narcissa Whitman’s sister, Perkins writes that Narcissa did not know how to interact with the American Indians and that she could not adapt to the new environment. He also believes that she displayed a proud and haughty manner, which made it difficult to build relationships with the Nez Perce and Cayuse people. As a result, he says, American Indians viewed the Whitmans with suspicion, which eventually led to the massacre.

In her letters and diary entries, Narcissa Whitman does display a haughty attitude. She refers to the area’s American Indians as "heathens” and "savages.” Also, she seems to feel uncomfortable about having them in her home. However, she seems eager to communicate with them and to convert them to her religion. In addition, she describes several friendly encounters with the Cayuses and Nez Perces, particularly after her daughter is born. Therefore, Perkins’s point of view is too narrow and does not address the complicated interactions between Narcissa Whitman and the American Indians of Oregon Country
