by teaching people about catholic ideas, Jesuits hoped to turn people against protestantism. Some catholic reformation leaders wanted to punish protestants as heretics. To lead this campaign, the Pope created religious courts to punish any protestants found in Italy. The catholic church reacted by making limited reforms, curbing earlier abuses, and combating further spread of protestantism. This movement was known as the catholic counter reformation. Ignatius Loyola was one leader of catholic reform.
