Read this excerpt from Susan Butcher and the Iditarod Trail. The wind was fierce, often blowing the sled over and keeping the dogs at a slow trot. Togo went steadily on. The storm had swept much of the snow off the trail and exposed the glare ice below. The dogs frequently slipped and skidded sideways, endangering Seppala's grasp on the sled. The light began to fade. As night approached, it was only Togo's remarkable sense of direction and Seppala's determination that brought them across the bay and back onto the original trail.
