Eventually, the strain forced him to relinquish his control of the territory, and in 1908 it became the Belgian Congo. Due to large-scale mistreatment of the indigenous peoples, including frequent mutilation and murder of men, women and children to impose rubber export quotas, Leopold II's rule in the Congo became an international embarrassment.
