The people of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China were dependent on the environment for the success of their civilizations. To grow food, the people of these civilizations needed fertile land. They needed water from rivers to irrigate their fields.

Any changes in the environment could have negative effects on the communities of early civilizations. For this project, you will read about how changes in the environment affected the people of early civilizations. You will then be asked to think about how the environment affects us today.

The first civilizations developed in Mesopotamia, the Nile Valley, the Indus Valley, and the Huang He Valley. These were river valleys that were suitable for farming. The climate was ideal. The soil was rich in nutrients. The river water could be channeled and used to irrigate crop fields.

For these reasons, river valleys were great environments for the formation of the first civilizations. But changes in the environment could challenge the stability of early civilizations.

For example, natural disasters like earthquakes or volcanic eruptions could destroy entire cities. Floods could wipe out crop lands and houses. Droughts could kill crops and cause famines.

Changes in the environment could also affect the economies of early civilizations. Poor crop yields did not leave the people of early civilizations with enough food to trade for other goods. In this way, the economies of early civilizations could decline during these difficult times.

The people of early civilizations had to come up with ways to deal with these environmental challenges. In response to floods, they dug ditches. After a natural disaster, they organized themselves to rebuild cities and homes.

Um many people would die from the drought. It would have an impact on idividuals since there wont be enough water for everyone and it would impact the economy in a way that it would go down.

The environment is a large factor in the ways we live, or even if we live at all. If the environment around us isn't suitable we wouldn't be able to sustain ourselves. Humans are fragile beings that need certain conditions to thrive, when these conditions aren't met things such as famines occur. Changes in our environment present many challenges, we would have to adjust to it all. We would have to have different housing systems such as roofs being built differently, the use of different materials, the placement of the houses, even the shape of houses would differ. Our farming system would also have to change, things such as the soil, climate, amount of water, etc. will change what crops we can grow and when. Our irrigation systems may have to be rebuilt and redone to fit our new farms. Due to the change in our climate, we would have to figure out what crops are most suitable for growing on our farms. For example, we may be able to grow corn but we cannot grow squash, we might be able to grow strawberries but not citrus plants, and so on. Even simple day-to-day things would have to change, such as our clothing. As of now, say we wear t-shirts and shorts but if the environment around us were to change we might have to wear parkas and snow pants.
