Charlemagne became king of the Franks in 768. He built an empire that stretched across what is now France, Germany, and Italy. He spent much of his 46 year reign fighting to increase his power and territory. He fought Saxons in the north, Avars and Slavs in the east and Lombards in Italy. Charlemagne was a devout Christian. Charlemagne thought that education could help unite his kingdom. Charlemagne encouraged the creation of schools. He himself studied widely, learning to read Latin and understand Greek.
