There are a lot of things that would be in common with Europe's exploration, starting with the high chance of no return. With the first mars colony the highest chance being that they would die the same with Europe. When the settlers first came across on boat they had little food and water when they first landed. After landing they faced Indian raids and a lot of them were killed. I think that with the mars colony not as many would be killed at the start but instead, they would run the risk of dying every day from system failure. I think that the main reason people would decide to take the trip is for glory. That, and a spot in the history books. I think that unlike Europe's colonization there would be no problems with the order in politics. Nasa (or SpaceX) would clearly say who had the power and they would all understand that. While in the other one most people thought that they could get away with taking the power for themselves. Who would stop them? Also, the reason most of them came was that they had the option to stay and go to jail or leave and start a new life.
