What hurdles have female firefighters had to overcome in order to serve their communities?

Women have been represented in the fire service for almost 200 years. The first woman firefighter we know of was Molly Williams, who was a slave in New York City and became a member of Oceanus Engine Company #11 in about 1815. However, firefighting remains a male-dominated field. The United States currently has over 6,500 women career firefighters and about 35,000 female volunteer firefighters, but this still only represents about 6 percent of the national firefighting community
