The Gettysburg address was written by abe Lincoln about 4 months after the American civil war where the union army defeated the confederacy. So the “we” he is talking about can be the union army or the north. I’m assuming the integrity and “good conscience” of the nation is being tested. Now obviously being during the cool down of the civil war in 1863. Since Lincoln is giving the Gettysburg address in Gettysburg Pennsylvania, it’s safe to assume that’s where the battlefield is located, even though the civil war was fought all over the U.S. Lincoln mainly supported and advocated for the north union army so he’s giving the speech in dedication to the field where his army died.
