The statement above is simply incorrect as it is totally different from Marx beliefs, a subsistence farm would only help the citizen and his family alone, which contradicts the belief of sharing and cooperating with the system.

Secondly, the idea of having a subsistence garden is the idea of having private land and producing for yourself only. This also goes against Karl Marx's beliefs, as him and Angels stood up for the abolishion of private property and were pro state force and public land.
