How do historians know that race and social class in Spanish colonies were closely related? There were specific terms used to divide people into different classes based on their parents’ races. People of all races were encouraged to become Christians. Because of their pure blood, indigenous peoples were given higher social status than Europeans. Prominent members of colonial society were expected to have at least one indigenous parent.
