The Homestead Act

On May 20th of 1862, president Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act. The law declared that any adult citizen or intended citizen has the right to get ownership of 160 acres of government land called a homestead. This also included immigrants, women, and former slaves, and it meant they could become proper landowners for the first time in US history. Lincoln has the intention to give an equal start and a fair chance to everyone who was willing to work for it.

The Homestead Act declared they would have to live on the land for five years and actively improve it. Upon applying, a person would just have to prove they have never taken up arms against the United States. Afterward, they could register land for themselves in exchange for a small registration fee. The distributed land was mostly located around the Mississippi river.
