On March 4, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), the United States’ 16th President, delivered his second inaugural speech. Weeks of wet weather turned Pennsylvania Avenue into a sea of mud; nevertheless, thousands of people came out to see the president standing tall beneath the Capitol dome, a reminder of the strength of his administration throughout the war.
