On Sunday, March 7, 1965, state troopers met the marchers at Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma. Authorities told the crowd turn around. When Hosea Williams asked to speak to the officer who had given the command, the police began to attack the marchers with tear gas and clubs. The day later became known as Bloody Sunday.
