The Spanish were basically the first to claim land in the beginning. When they came they came for 3 reasons ( God,Glory,Gold ). There had been already people settled there ( the Indians ). When they had got there they spreaded diseases onto the Indians which they weren’t immune to at the time and wiped quite a bit of them out. They also introduced the Catholic religion ( God ), came for Gold that was promised ( Gold ), and to say they had accomplished something ( Glory )
