In the early 1800s, people overdrinking started to become a trend and it was leading to the disintegration of families and relationships. Some people decided to fight against the trend and formed what were called Temperance Societies.

These were often spearheaded by Evangelical and Calvinist Christians and one of their modus operandi was to distribute evangelical materials and pamphlets which wrote about the need for abstinence from alcohol.
