After a period of settlement and difficulties to learn to live under new conditions, the colonists had to develop new forms of work.The colonies in the North, in the Massachusetts area, were more open to different systems of labor. The economy was more diversified.Agriculture was not the dominant economic activity of these colonies. The poor, rocky soil was the reason. Very difficult to grow crops there.These colonists had to work to develop the first stages of what would be the industries.They were also whalers and fishermen. Some had to domesticate animals.In the Middle colonies, the situation was quite different. Fertile soil and good weather conditions allowed agriculture to flourish.Indeed, these middle colonies were known as the "breadbasket" of North America. Regarding labor, the indentured servant was openly accepted in this region of North America.Mane people from Europe decided to travel to America to work as indentured servants. The case of the Southern colonies was different. Large plantation owners bought slaves to work during long hours to produce crops.Slaves were much needed to work on these southern plantations. Black slaves were brought from Africa and the Caribbean Islands to work in the south.The Southern colonies based its economy on agriculture.

We conclude that different forms of labor were needed in American colonial times, according to different reasons such as the fertile soil or not, the economic activities, the weather, and people's needs to survive.

The Northern Colonies relied on free systems of labor, in which people were not subjected to any restrictions to their personal liberty. This made the labor market more dynamic.

The Colonies of the Tidewater region, specially Virgnia, relied on indentured servants: a labor system that consisted in bringing European settlers to work for free for a few years, until they could pay off their trip expenses.

Finally, the Southern Colonies, specially South Carolina and Georgia, relied on the slavery of African Americans, which was not a new labor system at all, but that underwent some changes in the colonial period, related to the scale and commercialization of the enslaved labor.
