Consider what you’ve learned about the reasons for unions’ growth. Why did the Knights of Labor and other unions grow so rapidly in the late 1800s? Violence that sometimes accompanied strikes made workers feel that they needed a union’s protection. Due to an economic downturn, employers had become far more demanding of their workers. Successful negotiations and strikes convinced workers that joining a union could be helpful.
