The Sioux happened upon the Great Plains thousands of years ago. There, they began hunting the buffalo and relying on them for food. This impacted much of their development and is a major reason why they live in teepees. Despite the name, this tribe isn't one group of people. Instead, it is a large group of related tribes. However, each tribe governs itself separately and signs separate treaties. In cold weather, the Sioux Indians wore buffalo hide; in warmer weather, they donned buckskin. When preparing for battle or on special occasions, Sioux chiefs wore feathered war bonnets, a sign of status reserved for them alone.
