Many people during this time were scared that slaves would revolt. They wanted the slaves to be completely obedient and not even have the slightest thought of going against what they were told. Slave codes were created to stop this from happening.

Some slave codes were that slaves could not be taught how to read or write, or other things regarding to education. They wanted to keep slaves illiterate and not be able to form thoughts for themselves, to keep them from having thoughts of revolting. With slave codes, you also couldn't pay a slave for their work or hide them, both you and the slave would be in trouble.

Other slave codes were also prominent. Slaves could not bear weapons whatsoever, as this could mean they could turn on their masters. They could not be in large groups together, leave their masters property, and a lot of other numerous things.
