The major event  that led to the renaisance in the first place. It was known as Europe's dark ages where popes were beyond corrupt and tortured people for false confessions. After thousands of people died, they finally set aside religion and focused more on art and thinking. Why didn't they do this sooner, you ask? Well, the Catholic church at the time, was extremely powerful religiously. They had the people believe they were destined by God to decide for them after King Charlemagne was crowned emperor by a pope. They had the people believe them with every atom of their being. And anyone or any writing that went against what they taught, was destroyed or killed. No one could object. For example, Galileo and Martin Luther's 95 theses. They were both prosecuted by the Catholic church as a whole because of their logic. Later on, the Catholic church lost its power and wasn't the same ever again. It still had some power, just not what it used to be.
