There is a saying that "a society is only three (or nine) meals away from anarchy." No one is really sure where this saying comes from- but it gets discussed quite a bit when talking about how revolutions get started or how social stability becomes unstable. Those who make this statement are emphatic that a society, no matter how stable, will spiral quickly out of control if its population goes without food for a certain number of meals or days. For this discussion, look over the events of the Han Dynasty and its demise. Also, do an independent internet search on "hunger" or "famine" and "political aftermath" to bulk up your knowledge on what happens to a community that is hungry and restless. Be sure to look into different time periods and locations. When you've completed your independent research on the topic, answer the following questions: Do you agree with the statement that a society is only three (or nine-depends on the quote) meals away from anarchy? Do you think that this statement applies to the demise of the Han Dynasty? Why or why not?
