DIRECTIONS: Respond to the prompt below in the form of an essay. PROMPT: Choose ONE historical event covered in the first FOUR (4) chapters of Loewen’s book and provide an analysis which evaluates the extent to which the concept of “heroification” impacts our “collective memory” of United States history and causes the marginalization of various underrepresented groups in history. SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: 3-4 page typed 1- inch margins and be double-spaced in 12 point, Times New Roman font Include a clear underlined thesis statement (at the end of your introduction) Specific points supported by evidence and stated in direct response to the focus question Provide Chicago (Links to an external site.) format footnote citations Include a bibliography page in Chicago format See the rubric for more specific guidance SEVEN STEPS TO SUCCESS ON THIS ESSAY Step 1: Watch the Edpuzzle videos on Canvas! Step 2: Read the introduction & first FOUR (4) + NINE (9) – ELEVEN (11) chapters of the book Lies My Teacher Told Me!!! Step 3: Create a thesis to answer the question and layout specific supporting points around which you will structure your body paragraphs to respond to the question. Step 4: Find a primary source from 1491-1754 related to the event/person you selected to help you analyze the impact of heroification on collective memory and how it marginalizes certain groups. Find an additional secondary source (besides Loewen) that addresses the event/person you are analyzing and incorporate it into your argument. Step 5: Use the AP US History “Sourcing Skills” to analyze and incorporate the primary/secondary sources into your writing. You must use “Historical Context” for each primary/secondary source and then you must choose an additional skill for each to complete in addition to the “Historical Context”. For more information about “Sourcing Skills,” see this page. Step 6: Make sure that throughout your body paragraphs, you’re not only working to answer the question about how heroification impacts collective memory and marginalizes certain groups, but also you are using the primary/secondary sources and citing any and all sources used in Chicago format. In addition to at least ONE primary & secondary source, you are expected to cite from Loewen’s book. Step 7: Make sure your concluding paragraph not only recaps the key arguments of your thesis statement in a different manner than the original thesis, but also tries to relate the focus of your essay to other trends or events in history, the modern world, or, in this case, to your own textbook and/or classroom experience. Topic: How the Heroification of Christopher Columbus affects our collective memory of him in the United States as well as in history Textbooks. Title: The Heroification of Christopher Columbus
