2. Why did Tocqueville dislike the "irritable patriotism" of Americans?

In his Democracy in America, Tocqueville refers to the "irritable patriotism of the Americans" as their incapacity to take any criticism about their country, as if Americans would feel personally attacked if their country is criticized in any way.
