René Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle made two expeditions in search of the Mississippi River, the first one has started with the discovery of outlet of the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico.  La Salle, led his second expedition on 1 August 1684, with four ships and a band of companions including women and children to look for a possible permanent settlement there. The second expedition proved fatal as the ships were lost, their group faded away and La Salle's death because of latitude miscalculation and grave discontent rose among the group.
