The Great Compromise was an agreement b between the US's large and small states during the Constitutional Convention of 1787. It ensures that each state, particularly small states, would be represented well in the federal legislative structure, and its rights would be protected by the Constitution.

Consequently, the today's American Congress is a bicameral structure. The states are proportionally represented in the lower house or House of Representatives, while the upper house or the Senate is weighted equally among the states. Every bill must be approved by both of the houses before going to president.
