Explain how it was possible that most Southerners did not own slaves but supported slavery. Explain why most Northerners disliked slavery but did not do much to end it before the Civil War.

The economy of the South based on farming with the help of slaves.  The South maintained slavery as a part of the legal system, which benefited Southerners in generating wealth and holding a strong position in export. Many of the non-slaveholding Southerners also tied into the slavery system. Their commercial interests followed just like the planters. Poorer whites Southerner were legally and socially superior to slaves in society.

Northerners disliked slavery, as they consider it to be an illegal practice. They had a system of free labour, manufacturing industries built along with shipping. Slavery developed hand-in-hand with the founding of North and South, through the economic, political, and social system of the new nation. Some Northerners believed controlling than leaving them free on their will.

the noble might have thought that the system was far because they had lot of things and riches and the serf would have thought that the feudal system was un fair because of the way they were treated.
