One of the biggest issues slaves faced was abuse. Due to the system of racial slavery, many slave owners whipped, raped and tortured these slaves. These treatments were considered socially acceptable, and were carried out by the majority of slave owners. Physical issues caused by working in the fields included dehydration, famine, and exhaustion. In the early days of slavery, they also stripped slaves from africa of their identity, taking away cultural clothing, religous pratice, and native languages.

The use of indentured servants and paid labor would have worked perfectly fine in response to the labor shortage, however do to the fact that the poor outnumbered the rich in this time period, wealthy land owners used the racist system to divide the poor, so they couldn't rebel.
