The War Hawks were congressmen from southern and western states. Having grown up since independence, Wars Hawks displayed an aggressive and often nationalism which was unknown among the older generation. They demanded President James Madison to declare war against Britain.

The war was the issue in the presidential election of 1812, and the country divided on different ideas. A group of Northern Republicans opposed the war as their economy based on trading with the British. The War Hawk insisted on warfare as they desire to expand its territory and to stop the British restrictions on American trade.
