How did Europeans maintain a way of settling in the Caribbean?

The Spanish recruited the Tainos to work and mine the land. In exchange, the Spanish looked after the Taino's welfare and taught them Christianity. Once the gold was no more, the English, Dutch and French took the place of the Spanish and they made plantations using slave labor.
