In the 17th and 18th century Russia became a huge empire and, in effect, a world power. Nevertheless, it remained a country of poor farmers, while the czars and nobles enjoyed the luxuries of an outdated feudal system.

So in the early 1900s Russians began demanding improvements. There were some changes but the civil unrest grew and came to a head at the end of the first world war. Enter the Russian Revolution.
