La escritura jeroglífica fue la más antigua y complicada porque requería ser  realizada sobre  piedra.  

La hierática se realizaba sobre papiros para uso de los sacerdotes.

La demótica, al ser de fácil empleo y comprensión, fue usada por escribas y el pueblo en general.
