Preventing the Pacific Fleet from interfering with Japanese conquest of the Dutch East Indies and Malaya and to enable Japan to conquer Southeast Asia without interference. They took the lives of more than 2,500 Americans and destroyed 18 ships and about 300 airplanes. Caused high cost and economy struggle to repair. Japan managed to seize islands and colonies but later lost it. Practically useless attack not gonna lie.
