As you've seen, Romanticism was very much a reaction against the emphasis on reason that was so important to the Enlightenment. It was also a reaction against the Industrial Revolution with its factories and pollution and overcrowded living conditions that, as you'll see in a later lesson, was starting to spread across Europe. Why might Romanticism have been at odds with such developments?
