Vasco da Gama was born in 1460 or 1469 in Sines, Alentejo, Kingdom of Portugal and he was a Portuguese explorer, he was one of the most successful in the European Age of Discovery and he was the commander of the first ships to sail directly from Europe to India. He was the first ever European to find an ocean trading route to India. Vasco da Gama accomplished what many explorers before him weren't able to accomplished and his discovery of this sea route helped the Portuguese establish a long-lasting colonial empire in Asia and Africa. Over the course of his two voyages, one beginning in 1497 and the second one beginning in 1502, Vasco da Gama landed and traded in locales along the Coast of Southern Africa before da Gama reached India in 1498 on  May 20. Vasco da Gama died by contracted a disease called Malaria not long after arriving, in the city of Kochi, India on Christmas Eve in 1524, three months after his arrival.
