The Black Codes were a body of laws passed in the southern states between 1865 and 1866 after the Civil War.

With the end of the Civil War, the ideas of abolitionism prevailed. From 1865, through the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, slavery was formally abolished. The Black Codes introduced by whites in the South nevertheless limited the freedom of the African-Americans with low wages, restrictions in access to education and thus their possibilities for emancipation. With the installation of the Freedmen's Bureau, the US government had created an organism to defend the rights of the freed slaves, but on the other hand, it also looked for ways not to ruin the economy of the Southern States after the loss of free slave labor.

Therefore, some of the racist legislation that existed in the Slave Codes was recovered. Blacks had no voting rights, a ban on weapons and restrictions on assembly, including for worship services. Blacks were forbidden to testify against whites in lawsuits, and were explicitly prohibited from learning to read and write. All of these rules were elements in the Black Codes valid in multiple states.
