Following general lees surrender ,why did the union officers raise their hats to general lee and his staff?

1.) to accuse them of treasonous acts against the United States
2). To disarm them, take their equipment, and treat them as prisoners of war
3.) to prepare them for a march to Washington DC to surrender to president Lincoln
4.) to show them respect as he rode off to inform his troops of the surrender
