As a suffragist, she zealously campaigned for women's right to vote. She protested discrimination on the basis of sex which limited women's involvement in elections. Several times, Alice was thrown in prison for her protests. For example, she was once thrown in prison because she led her protest to the white house.

Alice used a tactics for political prisoners which was the hunger strike. It was an act whereby the prisoner refused to eat, in order to ignite public interest and sympathy. Alice employed this strategy which led to her early release from prison twice.
