Summary of the Korean War

At the end of world war two in 1945 Korea was freed from Japanese control. The North was occupied by the Soviets and the South was occupied by the US. In 1948 the country was divided at the 38th parallel with the capitalist South and the communist North. After the Soviets left in 1948 and the Americans left in 1949, the North attacked the South in 1950. The North captured all of Korea except for Pusan. The United States wanted to stop the spread of communism by preventing the domino effect. Later on in August UN troops mainly composed of US forces, led by General MacArthur, formed a perimeter around Pusan. Then in September US Marines launched an amphibious attack at Inchan and pushed the North back over the 38th parallel. Once the Yalu River was captured by the UN forces, Communist China helped the North Koreans by sending 250,000 Chinese troops. Fighting continued until 1953. The fighting ended on 27 July 1953, when the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed. The agreement created the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) to separate North and South Korea, and allowed the return of prisoners.

booker t. washington was an educator who established the tuskegee institute. washington argued that african americans should learn trades that would offer them the opportunity to be progressive citizens. instead of fighting against discrimination, washington argued that african americans should use their education and knowledge to become self-sufficient in american society and not in competition with white americans.

w.e.b du bois was the founder of the niagara movement and later the naacp, du bois disagreed with washington. he argued that african americans should consistently fight for racial equality.

ida b. wells was a journalist who wrote about the horrors of lynching in the south. wells work could be considered muckraking as it led to the development of the anti-lynching campaign.
