The the United States  entrance in the war had a great impact on the economy of South Carolina, as well as the rest of the nation. The effects were felt by the people. It was a time of great sacrifice and prosperity. There was a changed of roles in men and women at that time

In the beginning of United States involvement in World War II, South Carolina economy  was already recovery resulting from the many public works programs created by the New Deal, a collection of federal programs enacted to solve the issues caused by the Great Depression.

All areas of the economy of South Carolina was affected during and after the war. Due to the demand increase for cotton and other produce, the state’s agriculture, which had struggled since the early 1920’s, saw its wages doubled t between 1939 and 1943. Textile mills increased it's production and labor force  in order to maintain with war-time production goals.  

In 1939 and 1943, cotton consumption by textile mills went higher by over sixty percent. Military bases across the state employed thousands of civilians.

At the home front, life was categorized by collections for relief agencies,war bonds, rationing and numerous recycling drives. Items that were vital to the war effort, like, lard, tires,gasoline,  as well as food items like tea,coffee, and sugar were rationed. Money was collected for the National War Fund, a relief agency providing entertainment for the troops, clothing,food, and medical aid for war prisoners and torn countries
