Popular culture are cultural products and everyday practices that have spread as a mass culture, particularly since the 20th century in the course of social modernization. The establishment of mass consumption since the late 19th century plays a role in this concept.

It describes phenomena that affect society as a whole and encompass almost all cultural sectors. Examples of popular culture are sports, mass media, trivial literature and pop music.

In all cases, the popular culture of a certain place and time (for example, popular culture in America in the 1970s) accounts for the different concerns, interests and contexts that each society has in the situation in which it finds itself. In this way, popular culture allows us to understand the historical processes that each society went through over the years.

A clear example of how popular culture shows us the history of societies is the emergence of rap, as a countercultural movement based on "black power" and the African-American defense of their civil rights.
