Low land prices - The North

The North had lower land prices than the south because the distribution of the land was more egalitarian, which meant that almost anyone who wanted to be a farmer could own a plot of land.

High land prices - The South

The South had higher land prices because a few landowners owned vast amounts of lands in the form of large plantations, which reduced the supply of land for poorer farmers.
