In the early 1700's back when Haiti was known as Saint Domingue, there were slaves that were brought from Africa. They had known of their Afro-Caribbean religions, but were also introduced to Catholicism, and other religions along the coast.

When all of these collided, you got Voodoo, which is a black based religion that is practiced today by many people in Southern USA, and Caribbean nations that involves magic, rites, sorcery, and religious possession.
