1)- What was Gandhi doing in Johannesburg in 1908?

He was staging a protest on August 16, 1908 in Johannesburg outside the Hamidia Mosque with his 3000 strong protesters cut across different religions where he burnt documents and papers that was required by the government for people categorized as 'non-white' to carry on them at all times or face a prison term.

Mahathma Gandhi in his trial when he was charged with promoting disaffection, hate and contempt against His Majesty's government established by law in India when they were still colonised by the British.

Gandhi took responsibility for the Bombay occurrences, Madras occurrences and the Chauri Chaura occurrences which recorded loss of lives and property in acts of violence.

He stated that he was a man that did not believe in using violence to get his way  and condemned the actions of the people that perpetrated the violence and asked for a heavier penalty.

Gandhi showed the world that change can be effected without violence and blood shed. He was resilient in the face of severe persecution and incarceration and did not waver in his belief for freedom, equality and abolishment of discriminatory practices.

He was viewed by many as a pariah and a model for activism. He had a cult like following in his home country of India.
