Why did president washington want the united states to remain neutral

In his Farewell Address, President George Washington discusses how he wants the United States to avoid getting involved in foreign affairs because these relationships are more harmful than helpful. For example, when the United States were still considered part of the British Empire, they were forced into a series of wars (like the French and Indian War) that they did not want to be a part of. By avoiding this type of relationship again, the US would be free from involvement in affairs that they felt were unrelated to their country.
