After the Jews defeated the Syrians, they purified the Second Temple in Jerusalem. But the leaders were worried that they wouldn’t have enough oil to keep the sacred light in the temple lit. Miraculously, the candles stayed lit for eight days until more oil was brought back to the temple. My family honors this event every year when we light the candles on our menorah and exchange gifts with one another.
