Excerpt from The Story of My Life, by Helen Keller
The beginning of my life was simple and much like every
other little life. I came. I saw. I conquered, as the first baby in
the family always does.
I am told that while I was still in long dresses I showed many
signs of an eager, self-asserting disposition. Everything that
I saw other people do I insisted upon in ating. At six
months I could pipe out "How diye." One day I attracted
everyone's attention by saying "Tea, tea, tea" quite plainly.
Even after my illness, I remembered one of the words I had
learned in these early months. It was the word "water." ||
continued to make some sound for that word after all other
speech was lost.

These happy days did not last longOne brief spring musical with the song of robin and mockingbird , one summer rich in fruit and roses, one autumn of gold and crimson sped by and left their gifts at the feet of an eager delighted child. Thenin the dreary month of February, came the illness. It closed my eyes and ears and plunged me into the unconsciousness of a newborn baby. They called it acute congestion of the stomach and brain. The doctor thought could not live. Early one morning, however, the lett me as suddenly and mysteriously as it had come There was a great rejoicing in the family that morning. But no one, not even the doctor knew that I should never see or hear again

I fancy I still have confused recollections of that illness. especially remember the tenderness with which my mother tried to soothe me in my wailing hours of fret and pain But except for these fleeting memories, it all seems very unreal like a nightmareGradually I got used to the silence and darkness that surrounded me. I forgot that it had ever been different until she came my teacherwho was to set my spirit free But during the first nineteen months of my life had caught glimpse of brood, green fields, nous sky trees and flowers which the darkness that followed could not wholly blot out. If we have once seen the day ours. and what the day has shown ."

Helen Keller was born on June 27,1880. in Tuscumbia Alabama . Her parents Arthur and Kate Keller did not have a lot of money. Still, the early months of Helen's life were filled with joy. Her parents showered tiny Helena bright and happy child, with lots of love. Helen spoke her first words when she was only six months old, and she was walking by her first birthday. The future looked bright for little Helen

in February 1882. when Helen was nineteen months old, she was stricken with terrible sickness. She had a very high fever, which doctors at the time called "brain fever" It now believed that Helen might have had scarlet fever or meningitis Swelling around the brain left Helen with permanent damage. Although her temperature returned to normalthe rest of Helen's world did not. Everything around her was dark and silent. Helen was blind and deaf.

Without her sense of sight and soundHelen was trapped in a frightening new world. The clever girl had no means of expressing herselfso she broke dishesand kicked and screamed to be heard. While family members suggested that the Kellers send Helen to an institution, the family doctor had another idea. He believed that Helen could still learn. The Kellers reached out for help.

When Helen was almost seventeen young teacher named Anne Sullivan arrived from the Perkins Institute for the Blind to become Helen's teacher. She understood Helen's suffering and endured her tantrums. She tried to communicate by using her fingers to spell words into Helen's handsFor a while, Helen did not connect the tracing of Anne's fingers with words that represented objects. Then one day Helen and Anne had a breakthrough at the water pump. The cool rush of water on Helen's hands paired with the feel of the traced word water led Helen to sudden realization. In an instant, she had discovered language.
