The politics of Mexico takes place with the federal representative democratic republic where government is based on congressional system.

In December 1844 a coalition of moderates and Federalists forced Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna into exile and made Jose Joaquin Herrera acting president of Mexico. Centralists who had supported Santa Anna began planning the overthrow of Herrera. Underneath this internal political conflict was varying sentiment about the United States. The Federalists did not like the United States but were eager to avoid a war. The Centralists, however, were extremely anti-United States and felt threatened by U.S. expansion but were eager to go to war.
